I just got a new laptop today, which prompted me to write this blog about office setups. It’s good to know what your IT professional has under their desk. Currently, I am running a pretty standard DELL desktop, it’s running Windows 8.1, has 8GB of RAM and 4 23″ screens. This is my main work computer, I normally keep Outlook open on one screen; Microsoft Lync which is our communication platform open on another, and then I have 2 screens for everything else I am working on. I also have a second computer, it happened to be my old PC, an Alienware(which was at home, I now have a newer one). It runs an additional 2 monitors and I use this computer for monitoring and alerting dashboards for all our clients and connections. It gives me a kind of one stop shop view of everything we manage.
My laptop, which is newly out of the box, is a Lenovo Helix. This is probably the greatest machine, I’ve ever used. It’s absolutely fantastic. It runs well, and is extremely mobile. It has the tablet option, I can just release it from this docking station that converts it into a regular laptop. It’s built up also, Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a SSD hard drive. If you have never used a Solid State drive before, after using this one, you’ll never want to go back. It’s really slick and fast!!
Opposite me is Chris, he is the President of Cipher Systems Inc, he runs about 12 monitors to try and get everything done he is working on. He custom built his desk to support the PC he runs and the amount of monitors he uses. It’s a really slick setup. He also has the same type of setup where everything important sits on its own screen so he can have a real-time view of everything he does and quickly move between applications.
Our other engineers have pretty awesome setups as well. We as a company encourage our staff to be very personal and allow them to basically do whatever they want with their desks. We believe it makes for a much better working environment. We provide anywhere from 2-4 monitors and if something is laying around the office not being used, it’s pretty much up for grabs on who will get to use it.
